Many are confused about almost parallel careers in the aviation industry - namely Airplane Pilot and Airplane Dispatcher.

It can simply be summarized in one sentence as: "Airline Dispatchers are the Airline Captains on the ground".

During the flight operation Pilots and Dispatchers exercise joint decision making and shared authority. This the guiding principal directly emanating from FAA who believes that "two heads are better than one".

In order to exercise this shared decision making, the Dispatcher must be equally knowledgeable as the Pilot. The FAA Aircraft Dispatcher license (held by the Airline Dispatcher) is required to do the job. Sky Aviation Academy offers a Five (5) Week FAA Aircraft Dispatcher Certificate Course. This is the shortest approved program in the country. Here is a short video clip from Turkish Airlines that shows the job functions of an airline dispatcher.
